12 routes · 8 time slots · Updated quarterly · Real operational data
This report provides observed drive times for twelve Boston-area routes across eight time-of-day and day-of-week conditions. Use it for executive travel planning, EA scheduling, and departure-time decisions. These are planning estimates from regular operation — always add a 15–20 minute buffer for important appointments.
Methodology: Times reflect observed durations from downtown Boston (Back Bay / Financial District) to the stated destination. Short routes use minute ranges; long routes use hours and minutes. Seasonal variation is noted where significant. Data is reviewed and updated quarterly — January, April, July, and October.

This table answers one question: when should the car leave? Not "how long is the drive in ideal conditions" — but how long it actually takes on the day and time your executive travels.
Booking a 7 AM flight vs a 9 AM flight from downtown Boston:
For a domestic departure from Logan Terminal B with standard security, the executive needs to be at the terminal 90 minutes before departure (2 hours for international Terminal E). Working backward:
The difference between a 7 AM and 9 AM flight is not two hours of sleep — it is 15–30 minutes of additional drive time on a peak morning, which compounds with hotel pickup logistics.
Why Friday afternoon departures add 30–90 minutes:
Every route south and west of Boston — Providence, Hartford, New Haven, New York, JFK, Washington DC — sees outbound leisure and business traffic stacking on I-95 and I-93 from approximately 1 PM through 7 PM every Friday. The same Boston-to-Providence run that takes 55 minutes on Tuesday at 11 AM takes 90–120 minutes on Friday at 3 PM. This is the single most predictable variable in Northeast Corridor planning and the most commonly underestimated.
The Cape Cod summer factor:
Routes to Hyannis and the Cape see the most extreme seasonal variation of any route in this report. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Friday afternoon outbound traffic on Route 3 and the Sagamore and Bourne bridges adds 60–90 minutes to any estimate. Sunday evening return traffic from the Cape back to Boston is equally severe — 2.5–3 hours from Hyannis to downtown Boston is common July through August. If the executive has a Monday morning meeting in Boston after a Cape weekend, plan a Sunday afternoon return, not Sunday evening.
Why early morning (5–6 AM departure) is the most reliable window:
Before 7 AM, I-93, I-95, and the Ted Williams Tunnel carry a fraction of peak traffic. Every route in this table shows its shortest times in the early morning column. For long-distance routes — Boston to New York, Boston to DC, Boston to Burlington — a 5:30 AM departure consistently beats any afternoon departure by 60–120 minutes. Executives who can schedule around an early start save time and reduce schedule risk.
Boston → Logan Airport: The shortest route in the report but the most time-sensitive. Reverse-commute traffic through the Ted Williams Tunnel and Sumner Tunnel affects evening peak and Sunday returns. Early morning airport runs are the most reliable — 15–20 minutes from Back Bay. For Logan Airport car service, flight tracking adjusts pickup timing automatically on arrivals.
Boston → Providence, RI: I-93 South to I-95 South is the standard routing. The I-93/I-95 merge in Canton is the consistent bottleneck on weekday evenings. TF Green Airport (PVD) adds 10–15 minutes beyond downtown Providence. See Boston to Providence car service and Logan Airport to Providence for airport connections.
Boston → Hartford, CT: I-84 westbound from I-90 is the standard route — generally more reliable than I-95 for Connecticut destinations. Bradley International Airport is 20 minutes north of downtown Hartford. See Boston to Hartford car service.
Boston → New Haven, CT: I-95 South through Providence and the Connecticut shoreline, or I-91 South via Hartford as an alternate when I-95 is congested. Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital are in downtown New Haven — 5 minutes off I-95 Exit 47. See Boston to New Haven car service.
Boston → NYC (Midtown): I-95 via Providence is standard. I-84 via Worcester and Hartford adds 15 minutes in distance but avoids Rhode Island and Connecticut I-95 congestion on Friday afternoons. The decision is made in real time based on Waze and actual conditions. Bridgeport, New Haven, and the Cross Bronx Expressway are the consistent slowdown points. Full route details: Boston to New York car service.
Boston → JFK Airport: Same I-95 routing as Manhattan, plus the Cross Bronx Expressway, Whitestone or Triborough Bridge, and Van Wyck Expressway to JFK terminals. Add 30–45 minutes beyond Midtown Manhattan time. JFK terminal access varies by airline — confirm terminal at booking. See JFK Airport car service from Boston.
Boston → Washington, DC: I-95 South for the full 440-mile corridor through Connecticut, New York Metro, New Jersey Turnpike, Delaware, and Maryland. The NJ Turnpike and Baltimore-Washington Parkway sections are the most variable. Best for groups of 3–4 or suburban DC destinations. See Boston to Washington DC car service.
Boston → Portsmouth, NH: I-93 North to I-95 North (or Route 1 through the Seacoast as an alternate). Summer weekends see heavy Seacoast leisure traffic. Pease Tradeport business park is 10 minutes from downtown Portsmouth. See Boston to Portsmouth NH car service.
Boston → Manchester, NH: I-93 North direct — one of the most consistent routes in the report. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is 15 minutes from downtown Manchester. See Manchester Airport car service and Boston to Concord NH car service.
Boston → Burlington, VT: I-93 North to I-89 North — 215 miles. Ski season (October–April) adds Sunday afternoon return traffic from Stowe and Sugarbush. UVM Medical Center and Burlington International Airport (BTV) are primary executive destinations. See Boston to Burlington Vermont car service.
Boston → Portland, ME: I-95 North through New Hampshire and into Maine — 110 miles. Summer Friday outbound and Sunday return see Maine Turnpike leisure traffic. Old Port and Portland International Jetport (PWM) are 15 minutes apart. See Boston to Portland Maine car service.
Boston → Cape Cod (Hyannis): Route 3 South to the Sagamore or Bourne Bridge, then Route 6 East. The bridges are the bottleneck — single-lane merge points that backup 30–60 minutes on summer Fridays. Woods Hole ferry terminal (Martha's Vineyard) and Hyannis ferry terminal (Nantucket) are served with ferry schedule factored into departure timing. See Cape Cod Gateway Airport car service.
Q: How accurate are these drive times? A: These reflect observed times from regular operation on these routes. Actual times vary by departure point within Boston, exact destination, and day-to-day traffic variation. Use as planning estimates — always add a 15–20 minute buffer for important appointments.
Q: How often is this report updated? A: Quarterly. The data is reviewed and updated each January, April, July, and October. Current version: July 2026.
Q: Why are Friday afternoon times so much longer than off-peak? A: I-95 South corridor from Boston through Providence, Connecticut, and into New York Metro area sees heavy outbound leisure traffic every Friday from approximately 1pm–7pm. The same distance that takes 3.5 hours on a Tuesday takes 5+ hours on Friday afternoon. This is the single most significant variable in Northeast Corridor planning.
Q: Does TiLimousine use these times to set departure recommendations? A: Yes. When you book a long-distance trip, the confirmed departure time is based on current traffic data and these baseline patterns. The goal is to arrive with 30 minutes of buffer — never exactly on time.
