Cape Traffic Strategy
Summer Fridays are the deciding factor on this route. Depart Boston before 10 AM or after 8 PM and the run stays close to off-peak times. Depart between noon and 6 PM on a July or August Friday and the Route 3 approach to the Sagamore Bridge alone can add an hour. Sagamore vs Bourne Bridge Routing
Sagamore Bridge (standard)
Route 3 South direct to the Sagamore and Route 6 East to Exit 68 for Hyannis. The most direct routing and the default in normal conditions.
Bourne Bridge (alternate)
When the Sagamore approach is gridlocked, I-93 South to Route 24 and Route 25 over the Bourne Bridge, then Route 6 or Route 28 east, often saves real time despite added mileage. The decision is made in real time on the day, not guessed in advance.
