Private Aviation Ground Transport Boston — FBO Service at Hanscom and Norwood

Published July 15, 2026

Most of my private aviation clients don't come through Logan — they land at Hanscom Field in Bedford with wheels down at 7:00 AM and a meeting in the Financial District at 8:30. FBO pickup is a different operation from commercial airport service. What follows is how it actually works.

Private aviation ground transport in Boston starts at the FBO — the Fixed Base Operator terminal where your jet parked — not at a commercial arrivals hall. Hanscom Field in Bedford is the closest private aviation airport to downtown Boston. Norwood Memorial handles corporate turboprops and smaller jets 25 miles south. Cape Cod Gateway in Hyannis serves seasonal Cape traffic.

This guide covers what FBO service means, drive times from each airport, how to arrange tarmac-side coordination, and why private aviation clients prefer direct driver contact over app-based booking.

Hanscom Field (BED) — Bedford, MA

Location: 12 miles northwest of downtown Boston via Route 2 or I-95 to Route 4.

Drive time to downtown Boston: 35–45 minutes off-peak. 50–65 minutes during morning rush via Route 2 East.

Drive time to Logan Airport: 45–60 minutes — Hanscom to Logan is not a short hop; it crosses the city via Route 1 or Storrow Drive depending on time of day.

FBOs at Hanscom:

  • Signature Aviation — largest FBO, most common for Gulfstream and Citation arrivals
  • Jet Aviation — corporate and charter traffic
  • Atlantic Aviation — mixed general aviation and charter

How pickup works: Your jet clears the ramp. The FBO front desk notifies your driver — or your driver monitors your flight via ADS-B tracking if you provided tail number and operator. Vehicle pulls to the FBO terminal curb — not airside unless pre-arranged ramp access. You exit the FBO terminal to the vehicle at the curb.

Full airport details on the Hanscom Field car service page.

What to provide at booking: Tail number or flight operator, FBO name (Signature, Jet Aviation, or Atlantic), estimated arrival time, and destination address in Boston.

Norwood Memorial Airport (OWD) — Norwood, MA

Location: 25 miles south of downtown Boston via I-95 North to Route 1 North.

Drive time to downtown Boston: 40–50 minutes off-peak. 55–70 minutes during morning rush on Route 1 North through Dedham and West Roxbury.

FBO operations: Norwood Memorial is a general aviation airport with smaller FBO facilities than Hanscom. Common for King Air, Pilatus, and light jet traffic that does not need Hanscom's larger ramp capacity.

How pickup works: Same FBO terminal curb protocol as Hanscom. Smaller facility — driver is typically visible from the FBO lobby when you land.

See Norwood Memorial Airport car service for route details.

Cape Cod Gateway Airport (HYA) — Hyannis, MA

Location: Cape Cod — 70 miles from downtown Boston via Route 3 South and Route 6.

Drive time to downtown Boston: 90–110 minutes off-peak. 130+ minutes on summer Friday afternoons.

Use case: Seasonal Cape Cod arrivals — summer home owners, Nantucket connections via Hyannis ferry, Chatham and Osterville property owners who fly private into HYA rather than driving from Boston.

FBO pickup: Standard curb protocol at the Hyannis terminal. Confirm whether your destination is Boston same-day or a Cape Cod address — the drive time difference is significant.

What FBO Service Means — Tarmac Coordination Explained

Standard FBO pickup (most common):

Your aircraft parks on the ramp. You deplane, walk through the FBO terminal (often 50–200 feet from the ramp), and meet your driver at the FBO curb. Total time from wheels-down to in the car: 10–20 minutes depending on customs (international arrivals) and FBO processing.

Ramp-side pickup (pre-arranged):

For VIP arrivals, some FBOs allow the vehicle onto the ramp near the aircraft — subject to FBO policy and Massport security rules. This requires advance coordination: FBO name, tail number, driver vehicle description, and driver license submitted to the FBO before arrival. Not all FBOs permit ramp access for commercial ground transport vehicles.

What TiLimousine coordinates:

  • FBO notification of vehicle arrival
  • Tail number flight tracking via ADS-B
  • Vehicle description submitted to FBO security if ramp access is requested
  • Direct text to passenger with curb location when aircraft is on final approach

TiLimousine does not provide airside or tarmac escort inside the security perimeter without FBO pre-authorization. Ground transport is curbside at the FBO terminal unless ramp access is specifically arranged.

Why Private Aviation Clients Prefer Direct Driver Contact

App-based car services — Uber Black, Lyft Lux — are designed for commercial airport arrivals with standardized pickup zones. Private aviation FBOs do not integrate with rideshare apps:

  • No standardized "pickup zone" in the app for Signature Aviation Hanscom
  • Surge pricing applies even at 7:00 AM Bedford arrivals
  • Driver assignment is random — no consistency trip to trip
  • No tail number tracking — the driver does not know when your wheels touch down

Private aviation clients — corporate flight departments, family offices, charter brokers — book direct with a chauffeur who knows Hanscom's three FBOs, monitors ADS-B, and texts the passenger on final approach.

For corporate chauffeur service including FBO transfers, TiLimousine confirms flat rate before every trip.

Hanscom to Boston — Typical Day Scenarios

Morning executive arrival:

Jet lands Hanscom 7:00 AM. Driver at Signature Aviation curb 7:05 AM. Executive in vehicle 7:15 AM. Financial District arrival 7:50 AM. Meeting at 8:30 AM — comfortable margin.

Logan connection after Hanscom arrival:

Jet lands Hanscom 6:00 AM. Executive needs commercial connection at Logan Terminal B by 9:00 AM. Drive Hanscom to Logan: 45–60 minutes. Tight but workable off-peak. Not workable during morning rush — book the Logan connection separately or fly commercial from Hanscom's connecting charter service.

Evening departure from Boston hotel:

Executive finishes Back Bay meetings 4:00 PM. Driver picks up 4:15 PM. Hanscom Signature Aviation arrival 5:00 PM. Jet departs 5:30 PM. Standard pre-departure FBO timing.

Signature vs Jet Aviation vs Atlantic — Which FBO When

Signature Aviation Hanscom: Most common for Gulfstream, Global Express, and large-cabin jet arrivals. Largest ramp capacity. Most experienced with commercial ground transport coordination.

Jet Aviation Hanscom: Corporate flight departments and charter operators. Strong coordination with regular corporate clients.

Atlantic Aviation Hanscom: Mixed general aviation and charter. Smaller facility — faster curb-to-car on light traffic days.

Provide the FBO name at booking — not just "Hanscom Field." The three FBOs are on different sides of the airport and the driver needs to pull to the correct terminal.

International Arrivals at Private Aviation FBOs

Private aviation international arrivals — customs clearance at Hanscom or Norwood — add processing time similar to Logan Terminal E. Customs and Border Protection may meet the aircraft on the ramp or process passengers in the FBO terminal depending on the arrival.

Build 30–60 minutes of customs processing into your Boston meeting schedule after a private international arrival. The driver monitors wheels-down and adjusts pickup timing — but cannot predict CBP processing speed.

For domestic private aviation arrivals, curb-to-car time is typically 10–15 minutes from wheels-down.

Charter Broker and Flight Department Coordination

Corporate flight departments and charter brokers often book ground transport separately from the aircraft operator. When booking through a broker, provide:

  • Tail number and operator name
  • FBO name at arrival airport
  • Passenger mobile number for direct driver text
  • Destination address with building entrance if applicable

TiLimousine coordinates directly with the passenger on final approach — the broker does not need to relay timing updates if the passenger mobile is provided at booking.

FAQ

Q: What does FBO ground transport service mean? A: FBO (Fixed Base Operator) ground transport is private car service coordinated with the FBO terminal where your aircraft parked — not the commercial airport arrivals hall. The driver monitors your flight, notifies the FBO of vehicle arrival, and meets you at the FBO curb when you deplane.

Q: How long does it take to drive from Hanscom Field to downtown Boston? A: 35–45 minutes off-peak via Route 2 East or I-95 South to Route 4. 50–65 minutes during morning rush hour. Hanscom is the closest private aviation airport to downtown Boston — significantly faster than T.F. Green or Worcester for Boston-bound arrivals.

Q: How do I book a tarmac-side or ramp pickup at Hanscom? A: Provide your tail number, FBO name (Signature, Jet Aviation, or Atlantic Aviation), and requested pickup type at booking. Ramp access requires FBO pre-authorization — TiLimousine submits vehicle and driver details to the FBO before your arrival. Standard curb pickup at the FBO terminal requires no special authorization.

Q: Which airports does TiLimousine serve for private aviation FBO transfers? A: Hanscom Field (Bedford), Norwood Memorial Airport, and Cape Cod Gateway Airport (Hyannis). All three FBOs at Hanscom — Signature Aviation, Jet Aviation, and Atlantic Aviation. Flat rate confirmed before travel for FBO-to-destination and destination-to-FBO in both directions.
